One Woke Mama – The journey of awakening through motherhood One Woke Mama – Episode 043 – When you have no reference point for all you are experiencing Ok, here’s the thing. In my 38 years on Planet Earth, I have never experienced a Global Pandemic. Ever. So I’m going to guess that you haven’t either. With the current global climate, I’ve been experiencing all the myriad of emotions. From hope, joy, insane levels of gratitude. Feeling blessed and deeply reverent. Swinging to the other side – anxious, tense, wound up, heart-achey, sore, bruised, worried, concerned, heart broken. You too? I know it, because I’ve spent the last week hosting a free private Facebook – The 7 Days of Emotional Alchemy – sharing delicious practices to support more than 250 people across this beautiful earth of ours. And so many of those inside this group, my friends, clients, family members are expressing the same thing – the overwhelm, the intensity, the uncertainty, the instability. These emotions are felt, for most of us, to a depth and ferocity that we’ve never felt before. They are also coming thick and fast. Ahh, deep breaths! In a recent mentoring session my client uttered some words that really struck home… “I’ve never experienced this before. I have no reference points for this…” And god, I get it. Mostly, as we move through our human experience we often look for a point of reference to help us “cope”… we look back at previous experiences and stories within our memory to be reminded of HOW to show up. WHAT to do, and even WHY it’s happening. So what now then? If we no longer have a point of reference because we’ve never experience anything remotely close to this, then how exactly do we KNOW what to do, think, say… how to be? We are blessed to our the online world to rally each other, offer support, be in this together. But really, there aren’t other ways to externally resource. We are figuring it out as we go along. Moment by moment. Change by change. This can often make us feel suffocated. It can be hard to breathe under the weight of uncertainty and the perceived lack of security, control and support. But my loves, I’d like to present something to you. That is NOT an old idea. In fact, it’s ancient wisdom – many of our longest spiritual teachings have touched on this truth. And that truth is that you already have all you need within you. When you come into stillness, connect to your higher guidance and your spiritual support team you will be reminded that you are the physical manifestation of LOVE. You are the actual opposite- in mind, body and soul – of fear. That abundance, joy, love, contentment, gratitude are the threads of DNA that make you, you. In times of stress, more than ever, we need to remember to stand under the never-ending flow of love, resilience, inner security and connectedness. It’s your truth. It’s the truth. It’s exactly how to feel into certainty in uncertain times. The tap is always on. Just stand under it. This sounds so woo and whishy-washy…I know. I know. But here we are, the world is imploding (in a way!) and we are being FORCED to review the way we think, how we feel, how we show up in the world. What we value, and what we consider to be real and true. If we are to let our ego guide the way, of course, we’ll forget who we truly are (divine, infinite beings direct from source) and we’ll function through this experience from our ego-state; believing we a singular individuals, disconnected from the divine, left to our own vices and believing that we are at the mercy of whatever life throws at us. Affected to the very core of our being – the external world the only measure of who we are, what we are worth. So here’s a reminder. Your ego serves you – in times of crisis it acts to save you. Survival mode operandi. But it is NOT YOU. It is a part of your human psyche. But it is NOT YOU. Your ego seeks to find love, security, abundance, self-worth, joy, happiness from all things external. Your job, your friendships, lovers, your clothing, what you own and do, and who you are. Accolades and celebrations for you, because of you and what you do/create/offer. Your truth, your soul, your divine self doesn’t seek for any of that. It is already all of that. It need not look without because within you is all that you could ever truly need and want. So here we are unable to tap into a previous human experience that will resource us through this experience, which means you must look deep within, back to your truth. Back to the spiritual you – reconnect there. Come back home. Call on THAT part of you (the real, whole you) to armour up with love and expand your bandwidth to hold space through this. You will no longer feel you are in survival mode, and ready to fight your way through this, but instead willing to surrender into it, accept what is, take action where needed, and ride the waves (because as a spiritual being that is precisely what you came here to do!) +++ You can still join my FREE FB group – 7 Days of Emotional Alchemy. One Woke Mama – The journey of awakening through motherhood One Woke Mama – Episode 042 – The Different Ways We Respond To A Crisis When we experience a crisis, or a traumatic event, like the Global one we are in now thank to COVID-19, everyone responds differently. Our nervous system kicks into sympathetic (survival) mode, thankfully, which is such a blessing. However, the FIGHT-FLIGHT-FREEZE response can show up differently for each person, which means they will behave, talk, think in different ways to say, how you might be. Today’s episode is shining a light on this very difference. Highlighting how important it is to lead with compassion right now. Let’s avoid blame, shame and judgement as each of us shows up and responds to this crisis in our own hard-wired ways.  Yes we can support each other with different perspectives, ideas, information, but mostly I feel it’s important to accept where each person is at without anger, judgement and frustration. We have never experienced anything like this, and all of us are figuring this out one day at a time. So I ask you to tune into what’s underneath a person’s behaviour or reaction and lead with your compassionate, understanding heart. This is what our global community needs right now. Love. Trust. February has been a month of deep, somatic healing for me. I had a sense that it would be ‘big’ for me in some way – but I hadn’t anticipated the body-based healing I would experience (the first was the KaHuna Massage – see episode 038 and the second was a breathwork workshop – more to come on that soon). My heart has been doing a lot of releasing; deep shadows and blocks from within. Ancient hurts and wounds. Broken dreams and heartache. The what and why of it all is truly irrelevant. I’ve simply followed what my soul has wanted to do, to release and to feel. Today’s episode is in line with how I am feeling at the moment – I’m called to meditate on my heart and flood it with love and light; releasing block and shadows. One at a time. One Woke Mama – The journey of awakening through motherhood One Woke Mama – Episode 039 – Acknowledging Fear, Stress and Worry with Maria Golding. Sometimes we are so deep into our fear and stress that we can’t see it and therefore can’t do anything about it. It is the awareness of it, the simple acknowledgment of it that can create real shifts. As mamas we get lost in thee day-to-day, everything that ‘needs’ doing. If we can learn to acknowledge how we are feeling and shine the light of awareness, we might find real shifts and positive turns are possible. This episode is from my private Om Mama Love membership – which is no longer running. I had the pleasure of chatting with Maria Golding – who is a leader on all things parenting, motherhood blending with spirituality and the latest in science. Talking to Maria Golding is like being held, in a big warm mama embrace. It’s as if the divine mother herself in all her wisdom and love has you in her arms. Maria’s years of work with mamas comes through in our chat – you will really learn the power of acknowledgement and awareness and how this can create for a more beautiful, empowered and intuitive mama journey. A few extra thoughts: As mamas we are often in our head so much – planning, prepping, worrying, analysing, judging. We can be filled with fear and joy all at the same time. Our body can retain stress leaving us feel tight and wound up. It’s not easy putting your all into another being – even if it’s the most fulfilling job on the planet. Truthfully though, all these fears, worry and stressors don’t aid us in anyway. It’s best we let them go. That’s easier said than done, though, right? I remember noticing, once little S had arrived, how much MORE I was in my head than I had been for years. No amount of meditation or pre-baby self development work was going to shut up the ego voice of fear, worry and with that anxiety and stress. It actually shocked me. I felt that all my ‘hard work’ on becoming more mindful and present actually had been totally lost. That I had ‘fallen apart’… Until I remembered something powerful. These fears – this EGO suit that we put on that calls up to the surface all of the worries, concerns and what-ifs – are here to help us survive. We think and behave in this way because we MUST learn how to survive and copy. And becoming a mama is like going into battle – (maybe no where near as messy and painful!) it’s unknown and it can be confused and brutal at times. Our ego, and all the concerns it brings to the surface is simply just doing its job – protecting us (and our babies) and trying to survive in what is now a totally new world and existence. So, with that remembrance I chose and still choose daily to not judge myself and to not get lost in disappointment. Instead I THANK my ego, I thank those fears and worries for showing up and keeping me diligent and focused but I quietly remind my fears that they can now dial right now. They are now allowed to take the back seat and switch gears (or even volume to a quiet hush in the background). THE FOREGROUND INSTEAD BECOMES FILLED WITH PRESENCE, WITH CONSCIOUSNESS, WITH NON-REACTIONARY BEHAVIOUR, WITH REMEMBERING TO BREATHE AND PAUSE AND UNTANGLE FROM THE MESSY WEB OF MY MIND. Moving out of fight, flight or freeze mode when our nervous system is on high alert, and choosing to enter a calmer, more relaxed state in body and mind we not only gently nudge those fears out of the limelight but we also create space for clarity, for positivity, for lateral thinking, for joy. When all of that can show up we can then tackle those fears and worries without getting lost in them. That is just messy, uncomfortable, unhelpful. We want peace, more often than not. We want to return to peace when we are caught up in fear, stress and worry. Peace is our innate nature and peace proves, again and again, to offer SO much more in running our lives. SO WHEN YOU FIND YOURSELF MADLY TICKING THINGS OFF YOUR LIST TO DO, KNOW THIS, DEEP DOWN YOUR ACTUAL INTENTION IS TO SOOTHE THE ANXIETY WITHIN YOU. YOU ARE REALLY SEARCHING FOR PEACE, AREN’T YOU? In that moment, perhaps try instead to ask yourself; “What would bring me into presence and call in more peace?” And do that instead. Or perhaps I should say BE that instead. The list will still be waiting for you later when you are ready to tackle it from a place of peace instead of anxiety. As I turn 38 today (January 27th), reflecting on that time ten years ago has been a powerful reminder that sometimes, when we are in the thick of change, transformation and redefining ourselves we can’t always SEE what’s next. What is ahead of us is unknown – we don’t know what’s next. Now, ten years ago, motherhood has brought me into a similar space of transition. A transition where I have had to redefine who I am as a woman, in everyday. A dismantling of the old, a peeling back of the layers, a restructuring of the woman I am. Bushfires are raging through our country and many of us, especially those in the spiritual/self development world are faced with how to SHOW up, take action, pay attention and yet still be a “spiritual being having a human experience…” Firstly, spiritual bypassing is not the way. We cannot ignore what’s going on in the world, in our homes and families and around us by only focusing on being LOVE and LIGHT only. We can take action in some way, privately or publicly. In a small way or a big way. Whatever way feels good and true for you. As a coach, I never,  ever say to my clients that doing spiritual work, raising your vibration, focusing on love and light will leave you immune to suffering, hardship, struggle. For many reasons: 1. Your personal soul journey might experience growth through struggle. 2. Struggle leads to gold that can be mined, always. 3. Human experience is to dive into all sides – shadow and light. That’s what you’re here for. 4. You cannot prevent struggles and challenges happening to those around you, your community, your world. And if you think you are immune to it, i’m sorry, you’re wrong. Even as mamas we witness this daily – we cannot protect our children from every struggle and hurt and challenge. We aren’t meant to – that’s how they grow. As a Coach, there is something I do focus on – how can I help you learn, practice and be armed up with spiritual, energetic, emotional, mental, physical tools to support yourself through hard times. To level up. To manage your energetic boundaries, to ground yourself, to calm your nervous system, to pray, to meditate, to clear your blocks and beliefs and fears. The Relationship with coach and client is like a guide or map reader in the driver of a car. You drive. you are the driver, always, but I am there to give you the directions. To suggest the short cut, or perhaps even the long road to where you want to go. Navigate the bumps and the confusing roads ahead. Keeping you cool and calm and collected when you feel lost.  And also just holding space for when you lose your shit and encouraging you to pull over and pause. We can use our spiritual tools to navigate hard times. To face our challenges. To be present, loving and high vibrational AND positive despite the shadow we feel we are in. One Woke Mama – The journey of awakening through motherhood One Woke Mama – Episode 027 – Resourcing Yourself And Stretching Your Window Of Tolerance A comment from a friend got me thinking about why some women, some mothers, need more space, time and tools to refuel and re-centre and why others don’t?  I explore how we are each hardwired a little differently – how the base line state of our nervous system affects how we process and handle experiences in life – such as the relentless and sometimes exhausting days within motherhood. Motherhood forces us to stretch and grow. Some of us find this stretching process to be a gentle one. Perhaps we are don’t find daily life so taxing, others like me can find it really depleting. In this episode I explore WHY we might be different – embodiment, the state of our nervous system, history of trauma affecting our individual window of tolerance and our own stories, beliefs and patterns that shape our being within the world. I also share how we can stretch ourselves to cope and to be in a more resilient, grounded, centred and peaceful state. Using resources, wellness practices, tools and Somatic exercises we can ‘arm’ ourselves up to expand our bandwith, to spend more time in the Optimal Arousal Zone – the space that is centered between the extremes of our nervous system.
