I recently started purchasing my fruit and veg from Food Connect. It is an amazing service that connects us city folk with local farmers. I know, you are probably thinking why don’t you head to a farmer’s market. Oh, I do… don’t worry. But let’s be honest, it’s not really the most economically use of time, is it? It’s an experience, a morning spent with someone you love strolling through the markets, collecting your produce, eating bacon + egg sandwiches in the sun and all that other lovely stuff.
I have a few that are close to me, but not close enough. I’m busy and time is precious these days so I want to use my time to actually cook and enjoy the food and get on with my life. Harsh, but fair.
Food Connect ensure that your produce comes from sustainable and local farms. The produce is either organic or chemical free – all is clearly labelled.
Each week you get a box of produce that is 100% local – which mean it can vary alot each week. Sometimes there isn’t any kale because the weather wasn’t right for harvesting, other times, at last minute, the mushrooms get swapped with rockmelon… you get the picture. But I love it! I pick it up from the HQ in Rozelle (you can pick it up from other locations) and you are welcome to swap anything in your box that doesn’t tickle your fancy.

  • Silverbeet
  • Apples
  • Bananas
  • Nashi Pears
  • Carrots
  • Pumpkin
  • Zucchini
  • Choy Sum
  • Lettuce
  • Tomatoes
If something is unavailable they will email you to update you, they refund you straight away if necessary or you can swap it. The quality is amazing and it’s real. I mean, you can taste the difference.
Veggies make me happy. Especially when my whole fridge is stocked full.  Having the fridge full ensures I cook more. I feel bad wasting the produce, but also I think about the hard work these farmers put in to grow this produce and the fact that we already have more than enough in this country.
One thing I do love is looking in the fridge and seeing all the colours and I especially love seeing all of them on my plate.
Speaking of colours. In my bible (Real Food by Nina Planck) she lists the colours for veggies and why they are so special. The colours represent antioxidants (p.s. microwaves destroy antioxidants, enzymes and vitamins, so avoid, if you can).

Yellow and Green
  • Luetin and zeaxanthin help prevent cataracts and macular degeneration (healthy eyes!)
Carrots, mangoes, sweet potatoes, pumpkin
  • Alpha/Beta/Gamma/Zeta – Carotene to fight cancer and Beta also prevents LDL (cholesterol) oxidation
Red and Pink
Tomatoes, pink grapefruit, watermelon, strawberries
  • Lycopene lowers LDL and helps prevent lunch disease and prostate cancer
Red and Purple
Blueberries, grapes, red cabbage, red capsicum
  • Antocyanins delay cellular aging and reduce blood clots
So there you have it. There’s definitely more to our colourful fruit + veggie friends.
